The Church of Business

The Church of Business

The Church of Business

By Nick Woodward

The Church of Business stands supreme,
    her towered blocks confront the sky,
Like Dante’s souls her acolytes
    grapple upon rungs of hierarchy;
Not seeking for that paradise whose milk
    nourishes souls of humble faith
And lightens many paths to Rome,
    transforming insubstantial life.
Green envy spurs the frantic climb
    and dreams of power, promotion overdue,
Goad ever up the unquiet self
    to gulp at streams of moneydew.
Bitter the taste of paradise
    for those at last who grasp their dream —
Shadowing the graveyard of success
    the Church of Business stands supreme.
